--------------------------------
Enthralling Aomori prefecture is at the northernmost tip of Japan’s largest island Honshu, south from the island of Hokkaido. ITINERARY AT A GLANCE

  1. DAY

    DAY 1: HAKODATE – OWANI

Welcome to North Japan! You will start your active Aomori adventure right away with a scenic cycling tour of around 30 kilometers. The bike course will take you from Aomori’s third largest city Hirosaki towards Owani town in the southern parts of the Aomori prefecture, close to the border of Akita prefecture. (Don’t worry, later on there will be plenty of time to explore the fascinating Hirosaki city). The delightful cycling route lined up with apple trees and the picturesque view of Mt. Iwaki in the distance will knock you out!

  2. DAY

    DAY 2: OWANI – AJISAGAWA

From Owani town your trip continues to the western side Aomori prefecture, to the Ajisagawa area by the Sea of Japan. This time you can hop in the car for a bit. On the way you will be stopping to explore the neat Hirosaki city that once developed around the Hirosaki Castle ruled by a samurai clan. Here a local guide will take you around the historic old town area of Hirosaki Castle with a bicycle.
    ------------------------------
Before Ajisagawa, you will get to appreciate another gorgeous corner of North Japan loved passionately both by photographers – and cranes. With a length of 300 meters the stunning Tsuru no Mai Hashi or “the Bridge of Dancing Cranes” is the longest wooden bridge in Japan. The bridge crosses the scenic Tsugaru Fujimi Lake, with magnificent Mt. Iwaki on the background.

  3. DAY

    DAY 3: AJISAGAWA – HIROSAKI

It’s hiking time! Today a local expert guide will take you for an inspirational trekking tour to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Shirakami Sanchi by the Sea of Japan.
    ------------------------------
This peculiar area has made the World Heritage list for having the last primary beech forest in Japan. There is something haunting about this forest, since in the past Siebold's beech (or “buna” in Japanese) used to cover most of the Northern Japan. In the evening you will return to the lovely Hirose city, this time for accommodation.

  4. DAY

    DAY 4: HIROSAKI – TOWADA

From Hirosaki city the adventure continues towards the next destination, the round caldera Lake Towada in southernmost parts Aomori prefecture. In fact, parts of the lake are on the side of Akita prefecture.
    ------------------------------
A local guide will take you for a breathtakingly beautiful trekking tour at the picturesque Oirase Stream, known for its string of small waterwalls. In the evening you will have a chance to rest your legs a bit and challenge yourself with some fun local handicrafts!

  5. DAY

    DAY 5: OWADA – AOMORI

In the early morning there will be a beautiful canoe tour at the misty Lake Towada, the largest caldera lake in Japan’s main island. After taking in some soothing time at the mirror-like lake surface, you will have a chance to appreciate the beauty of Aomori from another angle.
    ------------------------------
No outdoor enthusiast visiting Aomori prefecture can miss the chance visiting the stoic Hakkoda mountains! You can ride Hakkoda Ropeway to the mountaintop and enjoy hiking and the stunning scenery beneath on the way from Lake Towada to Aomori city.

  6. DAY

    DAY 6: AOMORI – TOKYO

Before saying farewell to the magical Aomori prefecture there will be an interesting, guided tour in the Aomori city’s bay area, that is curled at the safety of Tsugaru and Shimokita Peninsulas. Hokkaido and Aomori really pride themselves in the fresh seafood, so while you are in the city, we highly recommend you give a try to the local specialty “Nokkedon”. This fun dish has as many variations as there are eaters: You will get a bowl of rice and then you can just walk around the local fish market, piling up your favorite toppings on it!
