OVERVIEW

Thinking of a trip to Aomori or Hokkaido? If you are interested in a guided private tour in Aomori and Hokkaido, click the orange inquiry bottom so that we can start planning! From this itinerary you can find some off-the-beaten-path travel inspiration about what to do in Aomori.
----------------------------
North Japan including Hokkaido and the Tohoku region where Aomori is located can be hard to get around just with public transportation. Especially during the winter having a personal driver and guide can open new possibilities for those who wish to explore the area on a deeper level.

ITINERARY AT A GLANCE

  1. DAY

DAY 1: NEW CHITOSE AIRPORT – NOBORIBETSU

Welcome to Hokkaido! Your personal driver and English-speaking guide will pick you from New Chitose Airport and together you will head towards the famous Noboribetsu hot spring town known for its steaming Jigokudani Hell Valley. On the way you will stop by at the town of Shiraoi where you will get your first taste of the unique Hokkaido culture.
    -------------------
There will be a relaxing forest walk so that you can stretch your legs after the long flight and by a cozy bonfire you will learn about the indigenous Ainu people of Hokkaido. In the evening you can dip into the relaxing hot springs at Noboribetsu.

  2. DAY

    DAY 2: NOBORIBETSU – HAKODATE

The second day of your private North Japan tour is a total foodie day. While you are in Hokkaido, tasting the extremely fresh seafood is a must. Today you will learn how to open oysters and make sushi with an expert chef.
    -------------------
For a lovely local dessert, you can savor some of the famous Hokkaido dairy products at a local dairy farm on the way from Noboribetsu to Hakodate. Hokkaido is a dream come true for the food enthusiasts!

  3. DAY

    DAY 3: HAKODATE – HAKODATE

The day three of your private tour is when you will become well-acquainted with the charming city of Hakodate, that is the third largest city of Hokkaido.
    -------------------
Being one of the first places where Japanese immigrants started their “pilgrimage” towards deeper parts of the island, Hakodate has plenty of historical and cultural importance for the Japanese. Today you will have plenty of time to check all the most important sights of the city, including “the Last Samurai Battlefield” Fort Goryokaku and of course the famed dazzling Hakodate night view.

  4. DAY

DAY 4: HAKODATE (HOKKAIDO) – HIROSAKI (AOMORI)

Ahoy Aomori! Today you will cross the Tsugaru Strait and land to Japan’s main island Honshu and its northernmost prefecture Aomori.
    -------------------
After a short trip with the Shinkansen bullet train, there will be a different type of train excursion waiting for you: Historical Tsugaru Stove Train from the era prior to World War II. In the train some scrumptious lunch treats including local specialties such as dried squid and top-notch Japanese sake will be served.

  5. DAY

    DAY 5: HIROSAKI – TOWADA

Today you will have a chance to try out something very unique in Hirosaki, a historic city once ruled by the Tsugaru samurai clan: A guided fat bike winter tour in area of the snow covered Hirosaki Castle (originally built in 1611)!
    -------------------
In the evening you will proceed to the Towada area in the southern part of the prefecture and on the way enjoy some exceptional local culture: You can create your own Made in Japan souvenir during a Kokeshi wooden doll painting workshop with a pro.

  6. DAY

    DAY 6: TOWADA – AOMORI

Behold, an extreme winter adventure awaits: Today you will join an ultimate whiteout tour at the Hakkoda mountains! This volcanic mountain range is in Towada-Hachimantai National Park located between Lake Towada and Aomori city.
    -------------------
There is even a movie that portrays the intense winter conditions that Imperial Japanese Army faced at these notorious mountains (close to 200 soldiers died during the incident). No need to worry, during the tour you will be in very good hands. You will indeed learn with a pro how to survive a snowstorm in extreme environment, but you will also be guided to some not-so-intimidating attractions in the area such as the comfortable Hakkoda Ropeway.

  7. DAY

    DAY 7: AOMORI – TOKYO

On the last day of your North Japan winter tour, you will experience some noteworthy local Aomori culture during a cool town exploration with a local guide. At the Nebuta Museum Wa Rasse you will learn about the intriguing Nebuta Festival, a summer festival featuring massive floats that come in various shapes. Last but not least, you can fish Japanese scallops for lunch.
