Let’s download the “Takikawa Rapeseed Flower Map” and see where they’re blooming. As we can see, rapeseed flower fields are primarily scattered about the Ebeotsu region. To avoid the damage that comes from repeatedly planting the same type of flowers in the same place, the exact location of the fields changes every year. This means that you can enjoy a different view of rapeseed flower fields next year!

The cultivation of rapeseed flowers in Takikawa began in 1989. An experiment on adaptation carried out by Hokkaido’s Central Agricultural Experiment Station led to greatly expanded cultivation areas. Now, Takikawa boasts fields that are the most expansive in all of Japan. The usefulness of canola flowers is not limited to their beauty, however, as they are primarily cultivated because their seeds are used to produce rapeseed oil, which is quickly becoming a special product of the town.

The flowers are coming up now! Usually these flowers bloom from mid- to late-May. A wonderful smell is wafting up from all around.

Because rapeseed flowers are being cultivated for agricultural purposes, please avoid trespassing into the fields.
